FINEAIR_DC8_N27UA_MIA_0197_JP_small.jpg
FINEAIR_DC8_N27UA_MIA_0197_JP_small.jpgThis is one of those special ones. The slide is not perfectly focused, but looking closer, I realized that this Fine Air DC8 is N27UA. This airplane was built in 1968. I took this photo in January 1997, and it unfortunately suffered a terrible crash in Miami just 7 months later...

FINEAIR_DC8_N7046H_MIA_0197_JP_small.jpg
FINEAIR_DC8_N7046H_MIA_0197_JP_small.jpgFine Air was kind enough to provide me with unrestricted access with one of their senior managers around their entire facility at MIA including going inside these old workhorse DC8's and also doing some night photography from their hangar roof. I had to make this photo black and white because the original Kodachrome slide is a bit too green- slide film and indoor light with no flash are a bad combination, so better to see it black and white than with an ugly green cast

ATI_VARIG_MEXICANA_ATLAS_MIA_1211_JP_small.jpgWhat a gorgeous selection of airplanes and color schemes. First we have an ATI DC8, followed by a Varig 767-200, a Mexicana 767-300 and finally with only the tail showing is an Atlas Air 747F

ati730plmar01.jpg
ati730plmar01.jpgCREW ON BOARD SURVIVED. Actual takeoff weight was 342,000lbs. 242,000lbs was the takeoff weight calculated, this is the result. Flight routing was JFK-BRU. I arrived on the site a couple of hours after the crash and PAPD/FDNY were still putting out the smoldering cargo inside. Luckily 3 crewmembers and 2 pax survived. More photos of the site to come in the future. My friend Dave Kaufman actually witnessed this aborted takeoff from the control tower, perhaps he can add more in the comments section.
