A tremendous amount of logistics and manpower went into making this photo a reality, in addition to the fact that the minute the photo shoot ended, 3 of the 4 airplanes were immediately towed to the terminal for their next flight assignments. I was honored to be invited to photograph this event, thank you Delta Air Lines!

I arrived on the site a couple of hours after the crash and PAPD/FDNY were still putting out the smoldering cargo inside. Luckily 3 crewmembers and 2 pax survived. More photos of the site to come in the future. My friend Dave Kaufman actually witnessed this aborted takeoff from the control tower, perhaps he can add more in the comments section.

The MD80 was brought in there for post-crash investigation and as is usually done after an accident, hide it from the passengers flying into and out of the airport. When I walked inside the airplane, about half way down the fuselage I felt a hump under my feet, that is where the fuselage buckled as the airplane ran off the end of the runway (I believe it was runway 31?), coming to rest on a dike. There were no fatalities luckily. For those that know me these days, obviously I don't wear my hair like that anymore haha

American Airlines, Dade County, Odebrecht Construction, T.Y. Lin Engineering all collaborated on a class-A job. The students of George T. Baker Aviation school are the very fortunate recepients of this 6 million dollar MD80 jet that will hopefully inspire students to make aviation a career!

I was in Manhattan (at the time I worked for an investment firm in Midtown) on 9/11 and my friends at the PA and JFK-ATC were working that day, a day we'll never, ever forget. My hotel has no air conditioning and on weekend nights especially, airplanes come in and out ALL NIGHT LONG. Patio door stays open due to heat, but then takeoff noise comes into the room and has no where to go so it goes through your head then outside again. No wonder it is only 40 Euro per night! Not sure if I'll take my wife there..

I chose to do this because here is a propeller airplane from the 1940's, and behind it is an ultra-modern propeller driven airplane from the 90's, so the contrast in airplanes begs for contrast with the airplanes and their environment in this photo. I know that some of you will really love this!

At the time this photo was taken JFK was operating on the 4's and there was light snow falling (RVR4000).

At first I had to take another look because I could not believe what just happened! Apparently the left main gear collapsed. Better on taxiway off the runway than when making contact on landing that's for sure!
